Tired of tired job descriptions? Here we share our top tips for writing great job descriptions. The goal, of course, is to attract and connect with medics and medical students, who we know are a busy and often hard-to-reach bunch!

Tip #1:  Keep it Simple

It can be tempting to write in a more sophisticated way for a sophisticated audience. Resist! Keep your copy accessible, using plain English. Whilst your audience will likely have a rich vocabulary, they are also busy and tend to scan when reading online.

Tip #2: Break Up Copy

Even when writing detailed content, stay away from long paragraphs. Instead, break up text into 2-3 sentence long chunks as we have done here. This will help your audience get to the core of your message more easily.

Tip #3: Keywords Are Key

Keywords largely determine whether your audience will see your content, so embrace them. Be clear on your keywords from the start and then generously sprinkle them in. Also, get keywords into your chunks and sentences early. Research shows that online readers spend more time looking at the left hand side of the page than the right.

Tip #4: Active Voice

Ensure your copy sounds compelling, active and personal as opposed to passive and dull. Get the tone right and readers will be more receptive to your core messages.

Tip #5: Put Key Information First

Set out your key message immediately, unlike in more academic writing. This maximises the likelihood that your reader actually receives your key message. Then you can follow up with secondary points.

Keep in mind that on average, readers will read a job description or article for about 10 seconds before deciding whether to click away!
