There are plenty of academic and training opportunities in South Africa amongst the several research centres, Universities and hospitals. Research posts and or degrees can be acquired either locally or internationally. As a clinician, there is far less of a slant on research activities than there is in the UK, however governance, teaching and maintaining your CPD remains important.
Postgraduate medical training is available for foreign doctors once permanent residency is obtained. Further examinations may be required. Notably it is difficult to enter the popular specialties as a foreign graduate; the most easily accessible training program is Family Medicine (equivalent of hospital based General Practice).
