Singapore is a sunny and tropical island in South – East Asia between Malaysia and Indonesia. Its total area is about 650 Square Kilometres, which is nearly twice the size of the Isle of Wight in the UK.

One of the reasons for Singapore’s popularity is the ease of living in terms of residence, transportation and the governance system.  It is also a great place to do business, to live a multicultural experience and to enjoy beachside activities.

Over the years, Singapore has advanced in certain areas and has obtained a number of important international awards that recognize it as one of the 4 Asian Tigers; these being Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore.

POPULATION

The population is about 5,4 million which makes it the second most densely populated country in the world (after Monaco). The population is comprised of four major communities: Chinese (76.8 %), Malay (13,9 %), Indian (7,9 %) and Eurasian (1,4 %).  Each year the number of expats moving to Singapore increases.

Singapore is a sovereign republic, with a legal system based on the English common law system.

HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

Singapore’s healthcare system is made up of two parts: the regulator (MOH along with its statutory boards) and the regulated (public and private providers). All Healthcare facilities are required to apply for a license under the Private Hospitals & Medical Clinics (PHMC).

LIFE EXPECTANCY

Life expectancy in Singapore is 80 for males and 85 for females, making it the 4th best country in the world for life expectancy.

CAUSES OF DEATH

Cancer has been the leading cause of death in the last few years (30 %) and this percentage continues to increase. The other main causes of death are Ischaemic Heart Disease (16.4 %), Pneumonia (16 %) Cerebrovascular Disease (9 %), and Accidents, Poisoning & Violence (5.5 %).

SAFETY

Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world.

In addition, the numbers of crimes decrease year upon year. Cases of harassment, theft, rape and crimes against the elderly are declining as shown by the statistics provided by the Singapore Police.

Expats should however take normal security precautions; such as locking doors and windows, not leaving belongings unattended in public places, do not walk alone in certain areas at night, etc.

Travelling around Singapore is very easy and efficient thanks to its fantastic public transport facilities. You have the option of travelling by bus, MRT, SMRT, private cars, taxis and on foot to enjoy all the opportunities that this vibrant city has to offer.
