Who Are We?

Teach First is the largest teacher training and leadership programme in the country. We seek to unlock the potential of all students, not just some. To do that, Teach First trains and supports talented professionals to become outstanding teachers from a variety of backgrounds.

What We Do

Over the past fifteen years we’ve placed over 10,000 teachers in low-income areas, supporting over one million students. We work with schools in every region of England and in Wales, helping them make a difference where it’s needed most. 63% of our former trainees who still teach work in schools in low-income areas. 56 are now headteachers, 402 are senior leaders, and 1,547 are middle leaders.

About the Role

We’re looking for medics and medical students to make the switch into full-time teaching. Medics have so much to offer in the field of education. Their advanced training in STEM subjects makes them a natural fit in the classroom at a time when schools often struggle to recruit in these areas.

Also, doctors’ natural inclination to enquire, listen and support people in need aligns perfectly with the supportive nature of teaching. We’ll help you develop into an inspiring teacher and provide support every step of the way so that you can make an impact where you’re needed most.

Benefits

  • Earn a salary from your first day in the classroom
  • Gain a fully-funded Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Leadership (PGDE). This is worth double the credits of a standard PGCE and amounts to two-thirds of a master’s degree
  • Close, expert support from your school and from us (and our support doesn’t stop when you finish our programme either)
  • Join a network of nearly 10,000 like-minded people – including medics who have transitioned to teaching – who understand the potential in all young people; this community will be on hand to share ideas, offer support or simply have a chat
  • Free one-to-one coaching from a former teacher, a school mentor and university tutor
  • 13 weeks holiday a year

Who are We Looking For?

We are seeking individuals who are passionate about education and committed to making a difference in young lives. Throughout the selection process, we look for the key competencies that make a great teacher and which are all listed on our website here.

Our academic requirements include a minimum 2.1 bachelor’s degree with honours (although some 2.2s will be considered) as well as various curriculum requirements.

Why We Need You

  • At present, 24% of science teachers in the poorest areas don’t have a relevant qualification
  • 50% of mixed-gender state schools don’t have a single girl studying A-level physics
  • By 2025 there will be 15% more secondary school pupils than in 2018
