Director, Allergan Medial Institute & Clinical Specialists (UK & Ireland) – Allergan Aesthetics

Job Summary

Director role to lead and direct the UK and Ireland (UK&I) Medical Education strategy and operational activity. This role will deliver on International and UK/I AMI medical educational tactics through a programme of Medical Education designed to support the on-label use of Allergan Aesthetics products. The AMI aim is to help meet customer medical educational needs, support patient safety and improved outcomes. This role is also responsible for the development of longer term, innovative strategies and operational excellence through an omni-channel approach to medical education. For example, supporting the development and launch of AMI Digital World locally for the UK/I. A key part of this role is to initiate, develop and maintain strong relationships with key opinion leaders (KOL’s), HCPs and other relevant stakeholders to deliver a best-in-class medical educational offering for the UK/I. Internal cross-functional activity is the cornerstone for developing programmes of education which maintain / develop existing HCP knowledge and skills. The role will therefore work closely with International AMI, ISM and local country functions to deliver a compliant programme that fits the UK/I HCP need whilst supporting key country strategic commercial activity. An important part of this role is to lead, and manage, the UK/I AMI team including Clinical Specialists.

Highlighted Key Responsibilities:

Development and Implementation of a strategic plan for Medical Education

  • Works with UK Commercial, Regulatory, Medical Affairs etc. and International Strategic Marketing (ISM), to devise a programme of Medical Education that not only provides Healthcare Providers (HCPs) with the expertise to correctly use Allergan Aesthetic products tailored to the UK&I audiences, but does so in a way that aligns with the commercial objectives of the UK&I Leadership Team whilst maintaining the Principle of Separation of educational and commercial activity.
  • Works across all Aesthetic brands collaborating with Digital Manager on new, more innovative (digital) channels to reach HCPs and other stakeholders in addition to the existing methods of engagement, which includes live and virtual conferences and events etc.
  • Creation and adaptation of centrally approved scientific and clinical content for training materials to be used in ‘In Country Educational Workshops’ involving local HCPs. Ensures best engagement of support functions, Med Affairs and commercial expertise in AMI plans.
  • Owns and allocates the AMI budget in the UK&I to deliver world-class, innovative strategies of Medical Education, with the market-leading Allergan Aesthetic products at the heart.

AMI Team Management – Acquires & Develops Talent

  • As necessary, recruits, trains, motivates and develops AMI team with particular emphasis on customer engagement and delivery and implementation of high-quality training and education.
  • Ensures development of AMI team keeps pace with business needs. Promotes ownership of and engagement with the AbbVie Ways We Work across AMI and Clinical Specialists teams.
  • Regularly prepares and conducts objective work performance and personal development reviews to evaluate progress and engender growth and development of innovative AMI and Clinical Specialist personnel and works with HR to ensure appropriate corporate/local programmes are in place to effectively support this work.

Advancement and Implementation of a KOL/Mentee Development Programme and Allergan Aesthetic Clinical Specialist Facilitation Pathway

  • Regularly reviews and conduct mapping of in-country trainer/KOL/Mentee expertise and interests. Collaborative working with ISM, and in-country contacts to identify potential new KOL/Mentee trainers.
  • Owns the deployment plan to partner with appropriate KOL/Mentee trainers for key clinical and scientific projects (including but not limited to podium presentations, training events and the use of print and digital media).
  • Update the development curriculum to offer advancement to our KOL/Mentee trainers and meet their needs for continuous up-skilling and new learnings through multiple channels including working with Allergan Aesthetic Clinical Specialist team.

Measuring Effectiveness of AMI Programme

  • Ensure accurate and regular measurement of relevant educational outputs from the delivery of the AMI Programme with presentation to relevant stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Critically reviewing, benchmarking and modifying the current format of delivery of the AMI Programme to ensure the delivery of an innovative, multi-channel, industry leading Medical Education Programme which aligns to the commercial objectives of Allergan Aesthetics.

Role Models and supports UK Culture as active member of the UK Leadership team

  • Accountable for the growth, resilience, health and performance of the UK&I organisation as a member and contributor to the UK Lead Team.
  • Jointly accountable for the effectiveness of company compliance and governance operations for AMI activity through participation in Compliance meetings and ensuring team compliance through support and training.

Skills and Experience:

  • Science/Business/Medical graduate or equivalent experience
  • Strong leadership experience and/or qualities and strong interpersonal, motivational and influencing skills; pursues formal and informal leadership opportunities knowing when to consult / inform and act
  • Adaptability – Able to work in a fast, dynamic, multicultural and matrix structure; adjust readily and able to delve into the detail and be hands-on as required.
  • Proven high performance track record of driving innovative solutions to business problems, in a cross-functional/ matrixed structure.
  • Experience in, and understanding of, Medical Education in Pharmaceutical and Medical Device (desirable) products.
  • Proven record in maintaining and developing relationships with KOLs, HCPs and other external stakeholders.
  • Experience of, or an appetite to utilize, digital channels for audience educational engagement.
  • Proven Commercial acumen with the ability to think strategically.
  • Experience in training / coaching individuals and teams
